How do I remove the print from my jacket?
Removing a print from a jacket can be more problematic than from other garments. Why? Jackets are made of different materials than T-shirts or sweatshirts. However, there are methods that are also effective, the first is with an iron, the second with a hair dryer or clothes steamer, and the third method requires isopropyl alcohol or nail polish remover with acetone.
Iron, towel and baking paper
This is one of the most popular methods for removing print from clothes. You will need an iron, a dry towel and baking paper. It consists of placing a towel inside the jacket where the print is, placing the baking paper on the outside of the print and ironing it with the iron on medium power. Done well, it is very effective and simple to do at home. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it exactly:
-
Place the jacket on a flat surface, this can be a table, tabletop or ironing board.
-
Place a dry towel inside the jacket where the print is, place baking paper over the print.
-
Heat the iron on medium power and turn off the steam option, iron the print through the paper for about a minute.
-
Carefully pull the paper off and try to scrape the print with your fingers or a plastic card (e.g. credit card)
-
If it doesn't come out the first time, repeat steps 3 and 4.
Dryer or steamer
This method works in a similar way to the iron method, only this time we don't need a towel. The materials needed are a hair dryer or steamer and a clean cloth. This involves heating the print evenly, this is important because a print that is not heated evenly will not come off easily. Instructions on how to remove the print from the jacket using this method below:
-
Place the jacket on an ironing board, table or countertop as before.
-
Place a clean and dry cloth over the print.
-
Heat the print evenly with a hair dryer or steamer.
-
Once heated, remove the cloth and try to scrape off the print with it, you can also use your fingers or a plastic card for this.
-
If the attempt fails, repeat the process.
Acetone and isopropyl alcohol - effective chemicals for removing print from a jacket
This method is a little riskier, it can discolour the colour of the jacket or damage it, so before attempting this you should do a test on a small area, an invisible surface of the jacket. For this method we need nail polish remover with acetone or isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth. I show the whole process below:
-
As always when removing prints, the jacket must be on a flat surface.
-
We give our chemistry to the cloth and do a test in an invisible area of the jacket.
-
If the chemicals do not damage the fabric, we can proceed.
-
We rub the print with the soaked cloth and let the chemical absorb into it, waiting 5-6 minutes.
-
After this time we try to scrape off the print, either with our fingers or a plastic card.
Summary
Removing a print from a jacket can be more difficult than from other garments due to the variety of materials it is made from. However, there are effective methods that can be used. The first is the iron-on method, where you need an iron, a dry towel and baking paper. This involves ironing the print through the paper, which softens the print, allowing it to be scraped off. The second method uses a hairdryer or steamer and a clean cloth, the even heating will help us remove the unwanted print. The third method uses isopropyl alcohol or nail polish remover with acetone, both of which can effectively remove the print but require care not to damage the fabric of the jacket.
